      Hi
      does anyone know where I can download Michlet waves? I have looked at the site from ciberiad but at this moment the 8.09 version is no longer available and the 9.01 is not ready for release until later this year.

      I believe Leo Lazauskas has deliberately removed the link to Michlet from his site, but I don’t know the exact reason. Maybe one of our other users is willing to share a copy with you?

      I have just downloaded this Michlet software but it does not seem to be functional.
      When I open the Milt807w.exe program the window I get has no functional components within.

      I get a window with nine boxes and a list on the right. There is nothing that responds to the mouse.

      In Delftship I have exported to the Michlet file and linked to the exe but it just flashes a window and closes when I click on the file.

      Any Ideas?

      You weren’t expectiong a proper Windows program, were you?

      That’s what it is supposed to look like.
      In stead of the mouse, Michlet works with key strokes.
      Read the manual, it’s all there…

      The main reason is that the input file for the latest versions of Michlet require a couple of extra lines. These lines need to be inserted manually into the file Delftship outputs.

      Michlet version 8.07 works well with Delftship. However, I have noticed that for some hull shapes Delftship writes garbage offsets to the Michlet file that it produces.

      Hi Leo,

      Can you tell me what info has to be added at the end of the file?
      It would also be interesting if you could give us an example of the garbage offsets so it can be fixed.

      I am finally finding my way around and am learning a allot.

      Leo,
      One of my desires is to work with the wave forms along the hull.
      I am working on a canoe design and am working to understand the way hull changes affect the wave form.
      The default in the program is showing wave form behind the vessel. Can this be setup to show the wave form along the vessel?

      I also need to learn about setting up the pressure settings since I expect I am working well below the default settings.

      1. I’ve attached the Delftship file Problem1.fbm

      (Edited after: FILES DID NOT ATTACH. WILL TRY AGAIN)

      This produces a bad Michlet file when I try to save it with 51 stations and 51 waterlines. The .mlt file shows that the table of offsets contains inaccuracies and some garbage.

      I have come across this sort of problem many times with a variety of different hulls.

      Maybe I am doing something really stupid! If not, I hope you can sort it out.

      2. I think it’s probably too soon to modify Delftship to produce the new Michlet input files.

      Firstly, apart from the problem above, the free versions work well with Delftship.

      Secondly, I haven’t finalised what extras I will be including in Version 9.x.

      So far I have added options for using a variety of form factors. There are also a couple of new hull series which don’t really affect the Delftship side of things.

      Other modifications, such as a more elaborate procedure for estimating sea-bed pressures, are really only of interest in mine-detection problems and for some esoteric marine environmental applications.

      I have been writing routines to let Michlet produce offset tables that can be read directly by Delftship. I might release that in the next version.

      I am also trying to get Delftship to work directly with other codes I have so I can estimate squat and its effect on the total resistance directly from Delftship output.

      I’ll try to get a copy of a compression utility that will work.

      1. Sorry, but Michlet only calculates far-field waves.
      These are waves behind the ship.

      Like you, I am also working on the effect of waves on
      the hull, as well as dynamic sinkage and trim (also
      known as “squat”) on the performance of canoes and
      rowing shells. I wrote a program that calculates the
      combined effect of the motion of the rowers and squat
      and its effect on total resistance, but I’m not sure
      how much to charge for it at this stage. Make me an
      offer in the tens of thousands and I’ll consider it 🙂

      I’ve imported your file and tried exporting it with 51 stations and 51 waterlines.
      The results seem just fine.
      Are there any other settings that you have modified, or did you perhaps use a different file than the one you’ve uploaded here?

      I am in error here, I was looking for the pressure signature along the hull.
      Now that I open my eyes I see the program gives pressure on the sea bottom.
      Being the depth was set at infinity a canoe will not give much of a reading.

      Coming from an aircraft background where we pay attention to pitching moments with our calculations,
      I have found it interesting that many or at least some hull designers ignore the lift/ downforce a hull produces and the effects on trim and drag.

      I am just working at the hobby level with this so I am far from funded one might say.

      The problem I described is random. Sometimes the offset table saves perfectly, other times it produces some strange behaviour.
      The file I sent works Ok sometimes with 51×51 offsets, but
      not with 53×51 or 51×53.

      I agree that it is often ignored. I am working with
      rowing shells where the combined effect of dynamic
      trim combined with the trim induced by the rowers
      moving in the shell is important. The trouble is that
      trim and sinkage are not easy to calculate quickly which
      is why many ignore it.
      My program “Flotilla” is able to calculate it at a rate
      of about 1 speed in 10 seconds, but that is still not
      fast enough to put it into an optimisation routine
      like Godzilla. Maybe in another 2 generations of
      personal computer improvements 🙂

      Dynamic sinkage on rowing shells can increase the
      effective displacement significantly too. It is like
      having an extra 5kg to 7kg per rower.
      It’s not important for many slow rowers, but it is
      critical to understand at the elite level where
      winning margins are often very small.

      Michlet is a DOS based program, and all the functions are by keyboard, not mouse. I suggest that you study carefully the manual that comes with the program. The file that Delftship exports, must be renamed in.mlt, and saved to the same folder as the Michlet program.

      I beleive it only responds to key strokes its not a windows mousey program.
