Joining points with an edge

I have this problem:
I’m trying to model a hull starting from inserting the points coordinates into Delftship and then inserting edges between points. After all the points have been inserted, when I try to add edges between any couple of them I receive the error messagge ‘Operation not allowed’

What can I do?

Rather than try creating edge directly, you should add a new face to three or more points. If an edge doesn’t exist between two successive points it wil be created automatically for you.

As far as i can see the edges are where two faces meet, so in order to create an edge, you must have faces first, in other words, you can create edges if there are not faces present, so as Marve said, create the faces and the edges will be created automatically.
