Hello DS fans, I’ve found a surface modeler or better, a CAD program quite well structured: CAESES by Friendship Design, apparently a German firm ( it must be by the complexity of details ) that offers a section very nautical :
It promise Hydrostatics AND flow analisys… hmmm nice.
I thaught it would be a complement to validate my designs, BUT it seems to work well only on IGES imported files…
So the question, is there a way to convert DS export files to IGES?
Try to understand Mr. Webmaster, I’s not about DS functionality – I’m a great fan of it – only tryn’ to enlarge my horizons.
Btw, maybe that program is well known, but for me it’s a new entry, the same for IGES’s issue.
So thanks in advance for anybody will aswer.
      Jurgen.

Thank you Sir, that happens when you get old and dumb: forgot the features on DS pro.
But since that’s just an hobby for me I’ll get stuck to the old free prog.
Btw CAESES is a nice piece of software, totally different and VERY demanding…
      I’ll recommend a glimpse.
      Jurgen.

      Hello Jürgen,

I know the folks that founded and still work on Friendship though the company was sold to the GL Group (i.e. Germanischer Lloyd, our German ship classification society) a while ago as I have heard.
The founding guys were peers of mine when I studied naval architecture and marine engineering at TU Berlin in the late 80s to early 90s.
Unlike me they all seem to have made a career in NA or could put their gained knowledge to something useful whereas I ended up in the IT and now only draw hulls as a pastime.
The Friendship office is situated in Potsdam-Babelsberg, which is the city that boarders next to Berlin.
I have visited their premises only once so far.
And as you correctly assumed, their Friendship Framework is highly sophisticated, at least too sophisticated for the likes of me who have forgotten almost all the theoretical ship theory and CFD background to fathom what’s going on.

I haven’t realized yet the appearance of CAESES, only seen their pro product the full framework.
But this sounds interesting, maybe to the hobbyist.
As you forgot to mention, here’s the link to CAESES

      Regards,
      Ralph

Thank you Ralph, it’s nice to have a bit of real life in this aseptyc digital-world.
Do not be sad, life deserves surprises as you don’t expect them, said the surfer eaten by the shark…
Anyway, I got a temporary license on Friendship Framework and try to use it at the best.
It’s an amazing tool, coupled with CFD it fulfills all your engineer’s wet dreams.
But as I’m not a fulltime designer I still prefer the boring – dot by dot – DS approach, it’s like an old carpenter job compared to a digital milling machine: up to you the choice…
What we have to focus on is the result And our personal goals.
And on that bombshell I’ll say you good night.
      Jurgen.
